Vice President, Electric Transmission Operations

Tom French is Vice President, Electric Transmission Operations for PG&E. He is responsible for the construction, maintenance and operation of PG&E's electric transmission grid, a system consisting of over 18,600 miles of electric transmission lines (60kV to 500kV) and 960 transmission and distribution substations throughout Northern and Central California. His current responsibilities include providing leadership and strategic direction for PG&E’s transmission business, the competitive transmission and energy storage businesses, and executing on the operational readiness of the grid of the future.


During his 34 years in the energy industry, French held progressively challenging positions at PG&E and at the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) where he led seasonal supply and demand forecasting, generation interconnection process development and implementation. He also served as the chairman of CAISO’s Transmission Maintenance Coordination Committee where he oversaw the performance of utility maintenance programs.


French is a registered professional electrical engineer and has a bachelor's degree in electrical and electronic engineering from the California State University, Sacramento.
